How to Import from China to Egypt: The Complete 2026 Guide

Importing from China is one of the most powerful ways for Egyptian businesses to access competitive pricing, diverse product ranges, and manufacturing scale that simply isn't available locally. But the process is complex — and for businesses doing it for the first time, the gap between a smooth shipment and an expensive disaster often comes down to preparation.

This guide covers everything you need to know: finding and vetting suppliers, understanding shipping options, navigating Egyptian customs, and managing the full import cycle from purchase order to warehouse delivery.

Why Egyptian Businesses Import from China

China remains the world's largest exporter for a reason. For Egyptian importers, the advantages are clear:

  • Price competitiveness: Manufacturing costs in China are significantly lower than local or European alternatives for most product categories
  • Product variety: From construction materials and FMCG to electronics, textiles, and industrial equipment — virtually every category is available
  • Scalability: Chinese factories can handle both small trial orders and large-volume contracts
  • Established trade routes: Egypt and China have strong bilateral trade ties, with well-established shipping lanes and customs procedures

The challenge isn't whether to import from China — it's how to do it efficiently, safely, and cost-effectively.

Step 1: Define Your Product Requirements Precisely

Before you contact a single supplier, you need a clear product specification. This means:

  • Technical specs: dimensions, materials, weight, certifications required (CE, ISO, etc.)
  • Quantity: your initial order quantity and expected annual volume
  • Quality standards: acceptable tolerances, packaging requirements, labelling
  • Timeline: when you need goods delivered to Egypt

Vague requirements lead to vague quotes — and vague quotes lead to disputes. The more precise your specification, the more accurate your supplier quotes will be, and the less room there is for misunderstanding.

Step 2: Find and Vet Suppliers

The most common sourcing channels for Egyptian importers are:

Alibaba and Global Sources — the largest B2B platforms for Chinese manufacturers. Look for verified suppliers with trade assurance, strong transaction histories, and positive reviews. Always request samples before committing to a full order.

Canton Fair — held twice yearly in Guangzhou, this is the world's largest trade fair. If you're importing regularly, attending once is invaluable for building direct supplier relationships.

Sourcing agents — a professional sourcing agent based in China can identify suppliers, negotiate pricing, conduct factory audits, and manage quality control on your behalf. This is particularly valuable if you're new to China sourcing or dealing with complex products.

Key supplier vetting steps:

  • Request a factory audit or third-party inspection report
  • Verify business licences and export certifications
  • Order samples and test them rigorously before placing a full order
  • Check references from other buyers in similar markets
  • Confirm the factory's production capacity against your order volume

Step 3: Negotiate Terms and Place Your Order

Once you've selected a supplier, negotiate:

  • Price: FOB (Free on Board) pricing is standard — the supplier covers costs to the port of origin; you cover freight and insurance from there
  • Payment terms: T/T (bank transfer) is most common; 30% deposit, 70% before shipment is a typical structure. Letter of Credit (LC) offers more protection for large orders
  • Lead time: confirm production and delivery timelines in writing
  • Packaging and labelling: specify Arabic labelling requirements for Egyptian customs compliance

Get everything in a formal purchase order (PO) and proforma invoice before making any payment.

Step 4: Pre-Shipment Quality Control

This step is skipped far too often — and it's where many importers lose money.

A pre-shipment inspection (PSI) is conducted at the factory before goods are loaded, typically when production is 80–100% complete. An independent inspector checks:

  • Product quality against your specifications
  • Quantity and packaging
  • Labelling and compliance markings
  • Any defects or non-conformances

If issues are found before shipment, they can be corrected. Once goods are on a vessel and cleared Egyptian customs, your options are extremely limited. A PSI typically costs $200–$400 and can save tens of thousands.

Step 5: Choose Your Shipping Method

Sea freight is the standard for most Egyptian importers. Transit time from major Chinese ports (Shanghai, Ningbo, Guangzhou) to Alexandria or Port Said is typically 25–35 days. Options include:

  • FCL (Full Container Load): you fill an entire 20ft or 40ft container — most cost-effective for large volumes
  • LCL (Less than Container Load): your goods share a container with other shipments — suitable for smaller orders but slower and slightly more expensive per CBM

Air freight is significantly faster (5–10 days) but costs 4–6x more than sea freight per kilogram. Reserve it for urgent, high-value, or low-weight shipments.

Key shipping documents you'll need:

  • Bill of Lading (B/L) or Air Waybill (AWB)
  • Commercial Invoice
  • Packing List
  • Certificate of Origin
  • Any product-specific certificates (health, conformity, etc.)

Step 6: Egyptian Customs Clearance

This is where many importers encounter their biggest challenges. Egyptian customs procedures require:

Import documentation:

  • Commercial Invoice (Arabic translation may be required)
  • Packing List
  • Bill of Lading
  • Certificate of Origin (authenticated by the Egyptian embassy in China for many categories)
  • Import licence (for regulated product categories)
  • Conformity certificates (for electronics, food, chemicals, etc.)

Customs duties and taxes: Egypt applies customs duties ranging from 0% to 40%+ depending on the product category (HS code). VAT at 14% applies to most imports. Some categories attract additional sales tax or excise duties.

Common clearance delays:

  • Missing or incorrect documentation
  • Mismatch between invoice value and customs valuation
  • Products requiring additional inspection or testing
  • Restricted or regulated product categories

Working with a licensed Egyptian customs broker is not optional — it's essential. A good broker knows the current regulations, has relationships with customs officials, and can navigate the inevitable complications that arise.

Step 7: Last-Mile Delivery

Once goods clear customs at Alexandria or Port Said, they need to reach your warehouse or distribution point. Factor in:

  • Port handling and storage fees (demurrage accrues quickly if clearance is delayed)
  • Inland transport costs
  • Warehousing if you need temporary storage

The Case for an End-to-End Import Partner

Managing all of this yourself — supplier sourcing, quality control, freight booking, customs clearance, and delivery — requires significant expertise, time, and on-the-ground relationships in both China and Egypt.

Many Egyptian businesses find that working with an experienced import and trade services company is more cost-effective than building this capability in-house. A good partner brings established supplier networks, freight relationships, customs expertise, and the ability to handle problems when they arise — because in international trade, something always does.
